The 2018 edition of the TTSSTFA Secondary Schools Track and Field Champions will be held at the Hasely Crawford Stadium, Mucurapo on Thursday, April, 19 and Friday, April 20.

Over 1000 athletes from close to 90 public and private secondary schools from the eight educational district across the country are expected to compete in the two days of action.  The Championships are the culmination of the Secondary Schools track and field season. Athletes earned the right to compete in the Championships after completion the zonal qualifiers which began in January.

Toco Secondary is the defending champion school and will be looking to retain the overall title. The giants of the North East Educational District will face stiff competition from Bishops High of Tobago and fellow North East school Sangre Grande Secondary.  With the recent format of crowning champion schools rather than zones, Toco Secondary students will be looking to extend their dominance.

The 2018 Championships were originally scheduled for February 22 and 23 but according to president of the TTSSTFA Dr. Phillip Allard, the Championships were in doubt this year due to economic challenges. However, he praised the Ministry of Education for the commitment given to ensure this year's meet came off. "We were really wondering if this year's  National Finals (Championships) would take place. We must thank the Curriculum Department of the Ministry of Education. The Director Mr. John Roopchan, Mr. John Thatcher and Miss Shelly Slater for being instrumental making statements to the Permanent Secretary that this Championships must not be cancelled."   Dr. Allard also highlighted the support given by National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB), Blue Waters and Sunshine Snacks to the championships.

The Championships are also held under the auspices of the National Association of Athletic Association (NAAA) who will be responsible for sanctioning and officiating of the meet.

Dr. Allard was speaking at the launch of the Championships at the TTOC House on Abercromby Street in Port of Spain on Wednesday, April 11.

Action in the Championships get underway from 10:00am on Thursday April 19, with the Walk-past of representatives of the competing schools set for the opening day April 19.
