Triple gold for Mark-Baird at World Masters

PERTH, Australia: Marsha Mark-Baird won her third gold medal at the 2016 World Masters (Over 35) Track and Field Championships when she retained the women's 40-44 long jump title. Mark-Baird copped gold number three with a second round leap of 5.57m to finish ahead of Nataliia Sorokina of the Ukraine (5.49) and Poland's  Renata Szykulska (5.29) on the penultimate day of competition on Saturday, November 5 at the at the Ern Clark Athletic Centre . The Point Fortin Secondary graduate won back to back long jump crowns after first taking the title at last year's World Championships in Lyon, France with a distance of 5.78 ahead of Sorokina.  With her gold effort in the long jump Mark-Baird added to victories in the Heptathlon and Javelin events earlier in the meet. She was hoping to leave Perth with four gold medals but had to settle for silver in the 80m hurdles held on Friday. The national women's Heptathlon record holder won T&T's eighth medal at the Championships. Geraldine George (silver-women's 40-44 Javelin/Shot put, bronze-Discus) and Dwayne Caines (silver-men's 35-39 100m) were the other medallists.

Mark-Baird, two-time Olympian, now has a total of seven World Masters Outdoor Championships medals. She also won gold in the Heptathlon, Long jump and 4x100m relays in Lyon. Meanwhile, George copped her 17th medal at the World Masters Indoor and Outdoor level. Going in to the final day of competition on Sunday the T&T contingent is 32nd on the medal table. However, no local athletes are listed to compete on the final day of action. Host Australia is well ahead on the medal table with 374 medals(122, 139, 113) with USA 147 (60, 41, 46), Great Britain & NI 108 (37, 38, 33), Germany 108 (33, 38, 37), France 58 (30, 16, 12), Finland 71 (27, 28, 16) , Japan 52 (19, 19, 14) and South Africa 41 (19, 15, 7) in the top eight.

 Men's 35-39 1000m silver medallist Dwayne Caines was also fourth in the 200m finals. In the men's 40-44 category Albert St. Louis was fourth and fifth in the 100m and 200m finals respectively. Inga Mc Intyre finished seventh in the women's 35-39 100m finals. Ruth Frazer-Munroe was also seventh in the women's 75-59 8,000m cross-country run.  Philbert Ryce reached the semifinals of the men's 45-49 100m and 200m events. Joan Hospedales advanced to the semifinals in the women's 50-54 200m. Donelle Stafford competed in the heats of the women's 35-39 100m and 200m sprints.

The T&T's athletes participated at the 2016 World Masters (Over 35) Track and Field Championships through the assistance of the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs and the Sports Company of Trinidad and Tobago.

Mark-Baird leaps to victory in the long jump
T&T's Marsha Mark-Baird on her way to victory in the women's 40-44 long jump finals at the 2016 World Masters (Over 35) Track and Field Championships in Perth, Australia on Saturday.
