Jada Barker (Corpus Christi/Cougars) got her US Collegiate campaign off to an excellent start winning the women's indoor 60m and 200m sprints at the Super Eight Open in Bemidji, Montana on Saturday, January, 14. Barker raced to the 60m gold in 8.01 seconds after clocking 8.10 in the heats. Her winning time was 0.13 seconds off the school record of 8.14. The Bemidji State University student then took the 200m in 26.87. Barker's performing is impressive as she only began her athletic scholarship at Bemidji State University in December. The 2016 Carifta girls under 20 4x100m bronze medallist one of tow T&T athletes who recorded wins in the US on the weekend.
Elia Nero (Toco Secondary/Toco Titans) was victorious on the US Collegiate season over the weekend. Nero took the women's 400m at the Aggie Team Invitational at College Station, Texas on January 13. The second year student at Louisana Tech University crossed the line in 56.96 (personal best). Breon Mullings (Fatima College/Memphis Pioneers) was second in the men's 300m at the Virginia Tech Invitational in Blackburg, Virginia. The University of Miami second year student crossed the line in a new personal best of 34.34 in his debut in the event. Mullings also helped his 4x400m team to fourth place (3:15.26). Another Miami student, Trichelle Leacock (Bishops High/Zenith) was 18th in the heats of the women's 60m heats (7.90). At the Vanderbilt Commedore Invite (Nashville Tennessee) Peli Alzola (St. Francois Girls/Memphis Pioneers) was 15th in the women's 60m. The Western Kentucky University sprinter clocked 7.60 seconds. Alzola was also 26th in the 400m (58.41) and was part of her school's 4x400m team which finished 11th (3:39.59). Tsai Anne Joseph (St. Francois Girls/Missouri) was 37th in the 60m (8.00) and 39th in the 200m (25.80).
Haysean Cowie-Clarke (Scarborough Sec/Bishops High/Zenith) finished sixth fastest in the men's 60m finals at the Towson Tiger Invitational (New York, New York). The Coppin State Unviersity final year student crossed the line in 6.91.
Earlier in January, Alzola was 13th (1:01.87) in the 400m at the Gene Edmond Open (West Lafayette, Indiana). The 2015 NACAC Senior Championships 4x100m bronze medallist also helped Western Kentucky to second in the women's 4x400m (3:56.17). Joash Huggins (St. Benedicts/Dovers) was seventh in the men's 60m at the Father Diamond Meet (Fairfax, Virginia). Competing for Morgan State University, Huggins crossed the line in 7.13. Cowie-Clarke was fourth in the men's 60m at the UMES College Invitational (Baltimore, Maryland) in 7.12.
